Learning to sail and learning to “cruise” are different.

S/V Rumbera is a perfect boat to learn both. 

 

DETAILS

We offer a 4 day/3 night “cruise and learn” charter in the San Juan Islands. We’ll meet you in either Anacortes or Friday Harbor and spend our days sailing to some truly stunning spots. You’ll learn about sailing, motoring, route planning, navigation, anchoring, and using onboard systems. We’ll also make time for hikes, kayaking, and exploring by dinghy. All that, and some of Captain Scott’s favorite spots gleaned from over 27 years sailing in the San Juan and Gulf Islands.

 

We limit this opportunity to 2 people because (1) the “immersion” into cruising is better if we keep numbers smaller, and (2) boats are small spaces. S/V Rumbera is a perfectly-sized “step up” boat on which to learn to cruise: not too big, but big enough to be extremely seaworthy and comfortable to spend 4 days on.

 

Dinners are family style, with everyone participating in meal prep and cleanup. We'll usually pick one night to tie up to a dock at one of the San Juan Island’s resorts. This gives us the opportunity for a shower, some rubbish disposal, dinner ashore, and maybe even a dip in the pool.

GETTING TO THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS

BY CAR: If you're driving, Anacortes may be your preferred place to start and end your adventure. We'll meet you at Cap Sante Marina in downtown Anacortes, which offers ample parking and a convenient grocery for provisioning.

Alternatively, you can leave your car at the Anacortes ferry terminal and walk onto the Washington State Ferry. The 1.5-2 hour ferry runs between Anacortes and Friday Harbor several times per day; see here for a schedule.

BY BOAT: The Victoria Clipper, a high speed catamaran, leaves the Seattle waterfront daily and arrives in Friday Harbor by noon.

BY SEAPLANE: Taking less than one hour, Kenmore Air offers several daily flights from Seattle's South Lake Union to Friday Harbor. Please note that weight limitations on carry-on luggage apply.
